In today’s dynamic global packaging landscape, when it comes to machinery and equipment, few things speak louder than proving oneself worthy of trust, especially when working for the first time with a customer accustomed to the best. This is what happened earlier this year, when SP Ultraflex Systems Pvt Ltd- India, commissioned the ROBOSLIT® plus FSU Dual Turret Slitter rewinder at one of Russia’s most reputed flexible packaging players: POLYGRAFOFORMLENIE FLEXO.
The journey began nearly two years ago, when a potential inquiry came in from Russia. The request? A fully automatic, high-speed (1000 MPM) Dual Turret Slitter rewinder, engineered for precision, reliability, and above all, meeting the European standards that the customer was accustomed to.
As discussions progressed, one thing became clear: this customer wasn’t just looking for another machine, they were looking for the best. From the very beginning, the customer insisted on top-of-the-line configurations with a keen focus on application-driven design, high levels of automation and user-friendliness. When the team at SP suggested the industry-favoured overhead path layout, their preference for a free standing unwind layout reflected their deep product understanding and highly specific production environment.
An alignment in mindset- focus, depth, and product-centric thinking is what initiated a good connection and rapport between the two companies. What followed was a process of rigorous technical dialogues, frequent design iterations and finally, a top-level visit from POLYGRAFOFORMLENIE FLEXO’s management to SP’s manufacturing facility in India. Their response was encouraging: appreciation for SP’s engineering depth, acknowledgement of the technology being at par with European standards, and valuable inputs for customizations that would help them retain the comfort and workflow of their current systems.
The commercial and technical deal was closed, but the real challenge was yet to come: payment execution. With the restrictions on banking transactions to and from Russia that prevailed at the time, traditional SWIFT transfers were not an option. However, the longstanding strategic partnership between India and Russia paved the way. Through persistence and strong intent on both sides, the complexities were navigated and a successful transaction executed using alternate cross-border channels.
The machine was then shipped and installed in Russia, with SP’s team making some tweaks post-installation, mainly to replicate the operational ‘feel and familiarity’ of the previous European machines.
Beyond merely a successful supply, this project has turned out to be a strategic foothold. With POLYGRAFOFORMLENIE FLEXO now joining our global customer family, and another successful installation already running at Houpack, Volgograd, Russia has now become a focus country for SP Ultraflex.
